De-Stress with Good Nutrition

De-Stress with Good Nutrition

August 02, 2021

I think we would all agree that calling the last year and a half stressful is an understatement! Global stress is very apparent with everything you hear on the news but many of us have hidden personal stress that piles up. Work, family, finances, and even the stress of not being able to “de-stress" with travel and spending time with family and friends have taken a toll. So what can we do to de-stress and make life less overwhelming?

A good place to start is taking an inventory of your health and wellness. Where stress is concerned, one of the best things you can do for your health is to adopt a nutritious diet. A balanced and healthy diet strengthens your immune system, helps stabilize mood, and decreases blood pressure.

Here are a few nutrients that can enhance stress reduction:

Vitamin C

Studies have found vitamin C can help lower cortisol and blood pressure during situations that provoke anxiety. Include lots of leafy greens, tomatoes, and citrus fruits to ensure adequate vitamin C intake.

Magnesium

Proper levels of magnesium can improve sleep which can help reduce stress. Nuts, spinach, salmon, and dairy offer good sources of magnesium.

Omega 3s

Research has shown this nutrient helps reduce surges in stress hormones and improve overall health. Fatty fish like salmon and tuna along with nuts and seeds are good food sources of Omega 3s.

Calcium

Foods rich in calcium may be able to reduce anxiety and tension. Include yogurt, cheese, leafy greens, broccoli, and almonds to enhance your calcium intake.

It is also important to remember certain foods or beverages negatively affect stress management. These include simple carbohydrates that cause swings in blood sugar and mood, alcohol, and caffeine. At bedtime, try a light snack high in complex carbohydrates to increase serotonin. Herbal teas can also be calming before bed and help you relax.
